Businesses' talent management programmes are failing to attract the right employees and are not utilising their current workers' skills appropriately, according to an expert.

Companies are not ensuring that the strategies they have in place are "filtering down" to the appropriate people, said outsourcing consultancy Hewitt HR.

The Building the Talented organisation carried out a recent poll which found that over half of employees questioned did not believe their company's talent programmes were being utilised by decision-makers.

Hewitt HR's head of talent consulting Nick Warren said: "Many line managers currently do not have the capability, time or will to manage talent correctly. As a result, too many businesses are failing to attract the right people or develop the talent they have."

A survey conducted jointly between IBM and the Human Capital Institute revealed that 62 per cent of managers are not developing their employees effectively.
