The results of a new survey have found that employees working for small and medium-sized businesses are more environmentally considerate than those working for larger firms.

UK energy firm E.ON carried out the poll which found that the workers of smaller firms are more likely to recycle and turn off computers and lights.

Employees of large companies said they felt they had little input when it came to their organisations' energy reduction strategies, greenbiz.com reported.

Commercial director of E.ON UK Jim Macdonald said that employers need to "cut the red tape" their workers face when suggesting eco-friendly strategies in the workplace.

"Our research shows that it's a feeling of needing to ask permission to make positive changes which prevents workers from taking the necessary steps," he continued.

The Shell Springboard Programme is currently offering cash prizes between £20,000 and £40,000 to companies with ideas for eco-friendly changes.
