Candidates with disabiltites often lack confidence when applying for jobs, an expert has said.

Disabled jobseekers do not believe they have valuable skills to offer employers, said a female spokesperson from Remploy, a UK-based employment services provider.

However, she added that the company had helped 6,500 disabled people into employment last year and that "opportunities are there – if supported with the right help and advice".

Employers also experience difficulties when dealing with disabled candidates, according to the source, as they are worried about making politically incorrect comments.

The spokeswoman added that companies are also concerned about having to make "major adjustments" to their workplace.

"Dispelling myths has to be the prime factor in opening up employment opportunities to disabled people in the future," the representative added.

Currently, 9.8 million in the UK, or one in seven people, is estimated to have a disability, according to socialfirms.co.uk.
