An office support recruiter firm has suggested that businesses should focus more on the reason staff give for leaving to help them keep their best employees.

In a survey carried out by la Creme, it was suggested that very few secretarial staff would consider working for an ex-employer again.

The company found that less than a third of those surveyed would consider working for a former boss.

Director of the firm Jo Stuteley warned that businesses need to be aware of the employee's original reason for leaving the business.

The office support recruiter said that the recent spate of 'boomerang hiring' - where companies re-hire a former worker - is down to the fact the employers are utilising a "logical pool of potential talent" to fill vacancies.

Ms Stutely argued that discussing the motives behind a resignation could assist firms in addressing staffing issues and "help retention rates".

Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics have revealed that there was an increase in the number of employed people in the three months up until February, despite the economic slowdown.
