Growing consumer inflation is forcing thousands of UK employees to take on second jobs, it has been reported.

PeoplePerHour.com has recorded a rise in registrations of people currently in full-time work, according to Personnel Today.

The websites states that currently 35 per cent of its freelance workers also have full-time jobs, which it says is a growing percentage.

Its founder Xenios Thrasyvoulou told Personnel Today: "On regular salaries, skilled professionals are struggling to make ends meet."

"It's little wonder increasing numbers of them are harnessing their experience and skills to offer freelance services outside office hours," he added.

The inflation rate is currently well above the Bank of England's two per cent target and is being fuelled by rising food and fuel prices, which have hit ordinary households hard.

With the government urging employers not to offer pay rises that match the rate of inflation, more workers may be forced to take on second jobs.
