Human resources' (HR) image as a sector dominated by female employees is set to change as recruiters prioritise skill above fulfilling gender quotas, an advisor claimed.

Though more women currently apply for the position than men, this is rapidly changing, Anthony Pierce, HR director of Hudson, said.

The stereotype of HR being a woman-dominated world probably originated from its previous 'personnel' title, according to hrzone.co.uk.

Mr Pierce commented: "We place an equal number of men and women. We're at a point where people are hiring the best candidates for the job. They're not looking at balancing numbers when it comes to gender."

He also said that the industry could see more the competition increase between men entering from different professions, graduates qualified in recruitment and those already established in HR work.

Meanwhile, figures released by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development revealed that 72 per cent of its members are women.
