A professional has claimed that women are "less aggressive" and "shyer" about negotiating their wages

According to the British Association of Women Entrepreneurs (BAWE), women are less eager to negotiate when it comes to wages, and will continue to be paid less than men in sectors such as banking and construction.

President of the BAWE Tania Hine said that pay discrepancies between the sexes is likely to take "a lot of years" to rectify.

However, a survey by recruitment specialists Perriam and Everett found that 98 per cent of businesses asked said that there was an even balance between men and women when it came to their best performers.

Ms Hine said: "It is very often that women leave work for a while to have children, come back and then they have to start somewhere lower down the ladder again."

Research by the Fawcett society found that only 11 per cent of the UK's top company directors are women, 19 per cent of parliamentary MPs are women and just seven per cent of top police officers are female.
