The number of adults involved in learning has dropped over the past year, new figures have revealed.

According to the annual Adult Learners’ Week survey by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE), the number of adults involved in education has fallen by three per cent in the past 12 months.

And those intending to start learning in the future has dropped to 36 per cent, slipping from 45 per cent in 2006.

Director of NIACE Alan Tuckett stated that the findings suggest "sharp challenges" in improving the skills of the UK workforce.

"One goal of policy is to engage those who say they have done no learning since school, the finding that just 15 per cent plan to get involved shows the size of the task if the government's goals are to be realised," he said.

The Learning and Skills Council recently warned jobseekers without ICT skills that they are at risk from being "digitally excluded".
